Is this version ripped from the remastered japanese DVD ?To be honest, I don't know. AniDB has the source as unknown.
There's a fair amount of jitter, but that could easily be present in a DVD drip because it's most likely from the film transfer. I don't see any VHS garbage on the bottom, and there's no real smudging of the video, so I'm guessing it's not VHS. There's an outside possibility it's from Laser Disc.

Whoops. Didn't see that I had put DVD rip in the description. The answer is still the same though - I don't really know.

Actually I have the original japanese DVD and I checked: it's not the remastered version, which looks a lot better and brighter (but has no subtitles)
This version is just ugly compared to it.

If you encode it using something easy like handbrake I will use the subtitles from this one to make a new version with both together

I own the remastered DVD of it, and I would like to help make a new release. However, I know nothing about making videos. Please send me a message if you would be willing to help. I'll try to figure it out myself, but I am not very good with this kind of thing.
There is a fairly big difference in some of the scenes (compare http://i45.tinypic.com/15cnga1.jpg from this release to http://i47.tinypic.com/qqzwvl.jpg from the DVD), so making a new version would definitely be worth it.

With Zoom player, I sometimes in also have to stop & restart the movie, after I've made a subtitling selection.
