I noticed that the opening and endings are separated - does that mean this release uses ordered chapters? I'm seeing this a lot more these days. Its a great idea but it's kind of annoying as i'm on a mac and there are no media players that support ordered chapters yet (that i know of).

Boil up up your cup noodles, sit down and get ready for a helluva ride. Be sure to watch the prologue episode first, it sets up the characters and backstory of Eden and Earth. It is not entirely clear why a crashing space station would set off a "Global Warming" catastrophic scenario, but I suppose that's the current fad; nuclear annhilation is SO 20th century.

Stunning graphics, both still artwork and animation.  Most layout drawings are very warm and textured and have the feel of carefully hand-drawn artwork.  A few places, like the tube races in the beginning and outside on the Moon, the racers and Takeru (Our Hero) are clearly overlays on the backdrops. Honestly, I've seen better green screen.  There seems to be something of a continuity break; under the city domes, gravity appears to be normal; on the surface, people move in expectable lunar manner. I suppose one could have postulated some sort of gravity generator, but this is nowhere suggested, neither does it seem likely.  Facial and body animation seem sometimes bizarrely overdone.  Perhaps this was to demonstrate the state of the art, but watching some of the faces, I found my own twitching and writhing in sympathy.  More like watching a demo for a 3d modeling engine. Fortunately, this is largely limited to the first couple episodes.  Overall, breathtaking. But I almost wish the animation was more conventional; the story itself is powerful enough on its own, and these little issues only detract.

The Lunar refuge city of Eden quickly is seen to be another technodystopia in the manner of Logan's Run,  THX 1138, or Rollerball; Eden has its serpent, and it is the innocuously named "Council," the dictatorship in charge.

I'm aiming for no spoilers here, so further comments will be perhaps cryptic.  When Takeru discovers the significance of a photograph he has found, it gave me a real chill.  When he discovers just what it is pictured in the photo, I literally stopped breathing for a moment and felt my eyes sting.  Later, when he sees what is over the rim of a certain crater - well, I won't embarrass myself. From here on in- it's a very fast-paced adventure yarn - it has to be, with only seven episodes, and allowing for actual running time of each episode, you come up with a good movie length.  I think this  is perhaps the best anime I have ever seen, and one of the best shows of any kind.  Unlike a lot of otherwise terrific animes that are spoiled by a weak (or incomprehensible) ending, this finishes with a brilliant triumph, a tribute to Man and his potential.  It reminded me somewhat of "Wings of Honneamise" in this way. There is the theme, naturally, of Freedom.  There is a saying referenced, that freedom will bring prosperity and abundance.  This turns out to be true in a rather more literal sense than one might imagine.

The Eden governing council is certainly an example of a government which provides every good thing to its citizens: in exchange only for their freedoms. These days when people unfortunately seem to think of governments primarily as providers of security, rather than as protectors of liberty, I would have liked seeing the importance of freedom hammered home a bit more profoundly.  The way "freedom" does indeed bring prosperity and hope is paradoxically quite literal and symbolic simultaneously. So literal, in fact, that I have to wonder if "freedom" in the socio-political sense is meant at all, or if it is nothing but wordplay after all.

Technical note: I got the Bluray version here and watched it on the computer;  both VLC and Windows Media Player Classic choked on it, but the current WMP played it fine.

Bottom line: Get it. Watch it.  It can be done in an evening.  If this doesn't blow you away, have someone check your pulse.

Mplayer X supports ordered chapters and is a pretty snazzy OSX compatible player all around.

Awesome show!  I had to ruin it for myself a little by watching it with VLC... didn't know about the glitch.  I'm sure I'll watch it again real soon though.  I couldn't believe they fit as much as they did into just those 7 episodes.  Amazing animation and I like the Akira style  ;-)  Great music and awesome story with mystery, adventure, action, and it ties up all its loose ends to boot.  I'll be showing this one to a lot of people  :-D

Yo.  First off thanks for uploading this.  Second I'd like to request that Otomo's name be added to the tags.  I know he only did the character/mechanical designs but it would be helpful to those who are trying to get everything he worked on.  Thank you for your consideration.   :-)

From the screenshots it looked to be gorgeous hand-drawn animation, but once the action started it switched to some atrocios cell-shaded garbage, is this consistent throughout the series?

Honestly, while I would normally agree with you as I, myself, am not a fan of cell-shading; I thought this looked pretty good as far as that style goes.  To me it looked like the most successful attempt (at least that I've seen) to make 3D CGI look like 2D animation.  Now, would I prefer it to be hand drawn?  Of course, along with 98% of all anime from the past decade or so.  I just didn't think it looked bad.

Freedom really is a fantastic show, short but very sweet :)

I'm not big into cgi, preferring earlier hand drawn anime but Freedom has some very well done cgi that suits the show.

I always want to eat some noodles whenI think of this anime! Love it.
