The subtitles are slightly edited version of the VHS script, taken from H2KAE rip (I started to type it down when slightly 'under the effects' one night... I have to thank to the russian fansubbers, because their timed scripts helped a lot!). Unless there is a special interest in that release, I think this rip can replace it.
There are three differences: 1) KSS intro logos are only on the VHS. 2) The US VHS added a few minutes of recapitulations (just a cut of the first ep's footage with unchanged audio) at the start of episode 2, most likely to hide the fact that it is disappointingly short :) 3) There is a "The End" sign at the end of Ep2 on the R2j DVD (erm...).

Nice!

@OnDeed: you might want to try out this next time; handy due to direct switching between releases via mouseover.

While I can't troubleshoot that player, I assume that it comes down to the mkvmerge 4.0 business (the author of the muxing application enabled some features without player support across the board by default in that version - for the player vendors to sort out). I found out about the issue too late, afaik old versions of MPlayer and VLC are affected, presumably your KMP is the same case.

If there is an updated version available, try to install it.

Alternatively, remux the file in mkvmerge with disabled header removal compression. (for both audio and video track, set compression to "none" - it's on the third tab available when you click the a/v track).

That means that version is very old in fact (at least 8 months; windows build of revision 31700~ works here. Are you sure your distro doesn't ship 1.0rc2 or something?). You'll need to get a newer MPlayer or MPlayer2 build.
As a stop-gap solution, you should be able to get the files to play by remuxing them with mkvmerge (if you are using version 4.0+, set "compression" to "none" for audio and video tracks). Alternatively, try if -demuxer lavf helps (I was able to get w32 build of r29355 to play that way, however it seems it had broken subtitle support back then).

PS: This is caused by mkv header removal compression having been enabeld on default in mkvmerge 4.0 muxer... it was a bit trollish move by the developper and I have since made sure to disable the "feature". This release however suffers from it.

Some mkvtoolnix releases later:
Code:
2013-01-01  Moritz Bunkus  <moritz@bunkus.org>

       * mkvmerge, mmg: removal: The 'header removal compression' method
is not turned on by default anymore. This affects the following
track types: AC3, AVC/h.264, Dirac, DTS, MP3. The setting in mmg
that turned it off by default has been removed.

Code:
1834 @Plorkyeran the troll is complete since everything supports header removal now
1834 @Plorkyeran so no reason to keep it enabled
