Here's some 1080p vs  spline36 upscaled 720p comparisons. The sharpness of this movie was disappointing — ironically, the TV series is sharper — but there's still a small difference, so I went ahead and encoded 1080p anyway.

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/125662
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/125663

1-1: The biggest difference in the movie, but there's only, like, three of these shots during the Miracle Lights section at the start.
1-2: Small difference in line art sharpness. It's most noticeable in small details, like the lines under his eyes here, but it also shows in other lines. Some scenes show pactically no difference at 720p, but a decent amount of the movie has about this level of sharpness.

2-1: This is kind of hard to notice in motion because all the little black dots are flying around, but you lose some detail here and in a few other similar scenes, like the transformations.

3-1: Lower resolution on top of chroma subsampling really hurts sharp black-on-red lines. This is an extreme example, but you can also see this a lot on Cure Melody's dark pink costume.

Semiapproved already? O.o

Well, I'll be doing this movie tonight, probably with release tomorrow, if you want to hold off for a comparison. I doubt it'll be better as I respect Desbreko as an encoder, and it will use the same script as this release (maybe with some slight modifications for consistency with my series), but just in case.

Hm... I approved the 720p before I saw this. Are you doing both 1080p and 720p?

It's technically 1072p and 720p, but yes.

Oh, that was fast. I figured you guys would know about Kristen's version, since she's been releasing the TV series, or I would've mentioned it.

Also, yeah, Precure movies seem to be about the only things that still use 4.0 audio. I think I've only seen it on one or two other movies.

Speaking of which, if anyone gets wrong channel mapping (dialogue coming through the back-left channel) and you're using the ffdshow audio decoder, try changing its AC3 decoder to liba52. libavcodec seems to assume that all 4.0 audio has a 2/2 mapping, while Precure movie audio is actually 3/1.

Not all people who do the TV series do the related movie(s) :P

In any case, we might as well wait and see.

There was a precedent. I did do CCS movies. ^^

Anyways, just finished and am uploading. I'm gonna try and save you some time and let you know what changed so you really just have to compare encodes. First, I restyled everything to match my style from the series, replaced OP/ED subs with what I'm using on the series, and changed various lines (ie something like "Come forth, Tone Ring!" -> "Come out, Tone Ring!";) to be consistent with the series. I removed most hard line breaks. I added in honorifics the few times they appeared (God, Suzu was annoying. Why couldn't Ako call her Suzu-chan?). There also was 1 typo I fixed (Silly Desbreko~) Other than that, the only other difference was I left in the opening screens of the studios and Desbreko took them out, but that doesn't matter.

Hopefully all that needs a comparison now is the encode. ^^ Regardless, release tomorrow when upload finishes.

I know it doesn't matter much, But I prefer to see them, even if it is just extra bytes
Here's to the comparison
I don't even know why I want this series, haven't even looked at its description yet, I went and bookmarked all the others a few months ago though, so may as well bookmark this one :P The colours just intrigued me  ;-)

Yeah, but there was a note about the movie in the post on CGi's site for weeks.

And argh, I thought I caught all the typos. I guess I should really start remembering to run spell check on the script after everything else is done.

Btw, the line breaks are there for readability. I'm usually not that aggressive in adding hard breaks (I actually removed a bunch of unnecessary ones from Astarotte), but when there's a long single line stretching across a busy background of two or three highly contrasting colors that may also be moving, it becomes a lot easier to read when it's a narrow double line instead. Precure tends to have a lot of scenes like that and smartly placed breaks make it easier to keep your eyes on the action instead of spending more time staring at the subs.

I know the reasoning, Desbreko. And I'm sure plenty of people like it with the hard line breaks. I just prefer it without the hard line breaks, and instead have padding done via styling. It's not something that should matter, it's just something that was different, so was mentioned. :p

Anyways, my version is out.

I got the same problem as you did. I got a 5.1 speaker setup & this 4.0 audio format really messed up the center channel just like you've mentioned. Your solution to change the AC3 decoder to liba52 works like a charm. The dialogue now is properly play out thru the center speaker. Thank you.
