Yes, that looks like a ramped up contrast (it'S not just dark parts pushed toward black, it also has brights pushed towards white), bleh.

wow this movie was filled with so much 'WTF?!' compared to the anime... and that was some serious wtf... 
the version i saw was totally dark-washed, so hey if this one looks better good on it, might help with my comprehension

I also prefer a slight detail loss over contrast being fiddled with. There is no point having your grain if you can't even see it.

Comparing nowIt seems TCL's version is VERY over-darkened
Take a look at the hole in the wall where the shadow is at the bottom of the screen: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/131552
TCL's version is almost completely black, where as DHD's retains detail
