According to Wikipedia the series is only a spiritual sequel to the movie because the story stands alone; however, many references suggest that it is indeed a continuation from the movie. So I would say after, just to be safe...

Honestly I think it better to not compare this show with the movie version. For me this show is another story from the movie, it just use the same name. Even it can not called the great story but graphic and a lot of sword fight is good ( also a lot of monsters ).
More than that I think I like heroin in this show more that one in the movie, at least she not a kind that throw away her life so easy.

Episodes 9, 10 and 11 has audio-video mismatch on japanese audio 
rest of the episodes are working fine with bearly noticable delays. English audio works well tho.

I looked into this and it does seem to be an encoding issue, I dowloaded those eps from different sources and the problem stayed, and since the CRC matches the official one...
If someone feels like it perhaps another offer could be made, but I discussed this with a member of staff and it seems the RaX release would probably not get accepted here, just fyi.
You could try to adjust the subtitle timing manually with your player, some of them support that function.

Actually I was more impressed of the fact that Kitaro has made musics to this series than the actual series itselves. It made me watch this through even the plot is mediocre at best.

My gods was this terrible, more so since I enjoyed the movie...
And yes, all the episodes have a/v synching issues.
