Freaky... I'll have to check this if it gets approved... I have a 273MB .wmv DVD rip I got from Nyaa a while ago that, considering the screenshots only, looks better than this over 800MB one. I'll have to check if it's just the screenshots or if the job can be done with 1/3rd the file size.

I have a feeling the file you are talking about may have been the same one I used. I got it off the Share network though. I am by no means an expert at re-encoding video, so I diddn't add anything to make it look better. If anyone else with more skills wants to re-do this I am fine with this not getting approved if it means a better quality copy will surface!

I don't think it's the same file... I mean, your re-encoding would have to have just about tripled the file size for it to be the same thing.

The one I have has slightly smaller resolution, but the colors look better/not so saturated.

the 273mb encode looks considerably less blocky - did you encode from that source meshugah?

need more specific audio and video data. i.e nominal bit rate, etc etc.
use mediainfo to pull it up.

note: was your source an iso file?

Yeah, I have that 273 mb rip as well. It would be better if you just offered that file (if thats what you used to re-encode) since this is only a lower quality file that is about three to four times larger than the original.

Ok so what should I do then? Should I offer the WMV file and swap the torrent? Should I rename it? Let me know. The main reson I re-encoded it was that I personally don't like wmv, and wanted it to be mkv...it turned out to be a heck of alot bigger file than I expected.

Well, the problem with reencoding it is that you're taking something that has compression artifacts, then re-compressing, which introduces it's own artifacts. It's like taking a photocopy of a photocopy.

What compression did the original WMV use? There's an outside possibility there's a way to demux the streams and remux in a different format without recompression.

.mkv is just a container, not a video format.. so I'm not sure what you did for the re-encode to turn that much larger if we have the same original file. If you just muxed the .wmv + .srt together you would get an .mkv of the same size, not something this much larger.

If you do have the same file I do, I think the best would be to offer that unmodified one, or at most do a simple merging of the video and subtitles into mkv, but no tampering beyond that.

I know that mkv is just a container. I did try to put them together originally but AVImux has decided to stop running on my computer for some reason. I was having trouble finding a program that would handle wmv.

No sense in re-encoding unless you grabbed an actual DVD ISO.
If the rip you found is of better quality swap that instead as it is. No point in muxing it with subs either, as noted in the wiki...

Ok. I swapped the torrent and renamed the file I had, as it was all in Japanese. This was the original file name if anyone cares to know: [アニメ] 宇宙海賊キャプテンハーロック劇場版アルカディア号の謎 (DVD 704x396 WMV9).wmv. I also put up new pictures from the rip, and changed a bit of the info. Oh, and I fixed the related torrents so they are not all mashed together. (Thanks to Exabyte2e64)!
