paste from the forum.

one note: apparently in episode 2 the French and Japanese audio track are mixed up (mis-labeled)on the source DVD.  so i provided all 3 audio tracks.  all other episodes are fine.

stats: are the same unless otherwise mentioned.
1&2:  712x538 pixels, 23.976 fps, video stream: 1500Kbps, audio: Jap/Eng AC3 2.0 192Kbps subtitles: English removable, Source: R1 DVD, Codec Profile: High@L3
3&4:  716x540 pixels, Jap Audio. Source: R2 DVD, Custom Subs by Nanto (removable)

I don't know if it is still possible, but in case a remux & swap is not out of question, could you change the display aspect ratios according to this calculator? That way, the dimesnions should be proper (according to specifications used fro DVD authoring).
http://ps-auxw.de/cgi-bin/ar-calc.pl

(in case you were only cropping, not scaling, the display size should be 712x524 and 716x527 for the 712x478 and 716x480 encodes respectively...)

OnDeed the beginning of each OVA starts with a CGI scene which is at a lower resolution than the rest of the anime and your quoted numbers of this encode are incorrect..   so that is probably what that refers too. or perhaps an average.  i encoded directly from the R1 & R2 iso files i procured from ADC.  so in answer to your query i will not crop out.

comparison: of the iso file & my encode: clicky as you can tell that are exact.   i adhere to the aspect ratio of the source dvd, always.

Just a question are the screenshot 2 & 3 from the same episode?
Because I find that the black borders around the subs are too thin, it'll be difficult to read in some scenes.

Well, you don't in fact. The notion that 720x480 video is supposed to be scaled to 720x540 is only a popular misconception. To adhere to the AR of the DVD source, you need to scale 720x480 to 720x527 (if it is 4:3)  - that is how DVDs are done by authoring tools and therefore the proper way to do it if you want the dimensions to be right.
See http://ps-auxw.de/cgi-bin/ar-calc.pl for a calculator that uses the right specification (ITU-R B.601 something).

To quote my earlier comment from today (heh):
» OnDeed
There is no 16/9 or 4/3 - there are just DVDs with a *pixel* aspect ratio of 4320/4739 (fullscreen) and ones with *pixel* aspect ratio of 5760/4739 (widescreen). That is for ntsc, pal has different values obviously.
If you do the math, you will see that proper displaying aspect ratio (that is, displaying on a device with pixels with 1:1 ar) is always a bit wider that you would expect just based on those "4:3" or "16:9" expectations.

As for your screenshots, it doesn't help that DVD/video players do this wrong themselves as you can see there. Trust me, I (and other people) tried to actually meassure if a DVD aspect ratio of select discs is correctly set. The result was that the convoluted way I just suggested (and the calculator I linked) is the right way, whereas the naive way ("4:3 is supposed to be 720x540, 16:9 is supposed to be 853x480";) was proven to be wrong...

according to IMDB the aspect ratio of Queen Emeraldas is 1:33 : 1.

so then:
episodes 1 & 2:  712/538= 1.325925925
episodes 3 & 4:  716/540= 1.325925925

round the numbers and you get 1.33

Lenmaer: subs are legible don't worry.

1.33 is just a designation for the rough size of the frame, you could call them widescreen, fullscreen...
Proper *display dimensions* of the video  are something different, and they depend on the amount of black bars that were cropped off.
The videos presented on the DVDs aren't exactly 4:3 everytime - they would be if there was 8pixels of black bars on each side, resulting into 704x480 resolution, displayed at 704x527. As you can see, the amount of black bars on DVDs does vary a lot: I've seen 700-720 width with the so-called 4:3 video. Those all would be claimed to be 4:3 by imdb, so you see it doesn't make sense to follow what imdb says, it is just a rough info about the film frame format.

What I suggest is the actual specification as used bu NTSC tv format itself AND the authoring process of DVDs. Don't you think that is a better thing to trust?

"A Quick Guide to Digital Video Resolution and Aspect Ratio Conversions"
http://lipas.uwasa.fi/~f76998/video/conversion/

Quick being an understatement, but interesting read non the less.

Spoiler
The DVD is a hybrid analog/digital format...

NTSC 720x480 (4:3) =  ~1.3674 (not 1.333)

...which means that OnDeed is correct.

ps. NTSC 16:9 = ~1.8232

Anyone remember those music videos from Daft Punk like One More Time, Aerodynamic, Harder, Better, Faster Stronger and Digital Love? The girl and the guy look just like 2 of the band members.

The videos for Daft Punk's Interstella5555 were done by Leiji Matsumoto ... Hense the similarities between them.

@ temuchin ~ Thanks soo much for taking the time to do this.

This is the greatest news I could receive today. I've been years waiting for this to happen... I am from Spain, where only the first two OVA were available, some years ago. I thought it was due to some problem with the spanish license, but then I learned that there was the same problem with the english (and french too, I think) editions. So it is great to finally enjoy the 4 of them all together.

I really love Matsumoto's works, so thanks a lot for the effort @temuchin.
