Are the subtitles the same as the ones in the R1? If so they are dubtitles and are not very accurate. In any case though the rip looks better than the R1 so I'm keeping my hopes up

Yes, these are the dubtitles, based on the English track, but cross-checking with the two good Russian dubs, they are not too far of the mark...

Talk about old. I used to have this on VHS. Didn't even know what anime was back then.

I've created an Unofficial Soundtrack for this film. Link added to the description as well.
EDIT: The UST has been updated with version 2, there are now 2 sub-soundtracks - English and Japanese. The Japanese soundtrack has a complete set of music themes.

Oh god -- I remember watching this a dozen times or so when I was a little kid!
One of my cousins returned from Western Europe with a bunch of goodies, including the first color television set I had ever seen, along with a VCR. We then started renting or buying or borrowing tapes like crazy and sitting glued in front of it for hours on end, as if it was the most fascinating thing in the universe! Ah, good times...
Downloading this, because I'm having a serious case of nostalgia right now.

Thank you very much for this release. It's a pity that the japanese dub is so badly synchronized, for example at 00:21:34.000 (it's not your fault).

I tried to verify that everything was in sync. As far as I remember both the English and the Japanese tracks came from the same DVD. I'll check if anything can be done about syncing once I am fully back in spring...

Following MU's demise, I've updated the description with the new links to the soundtracks.
And a bit belated reply about the sync. I think that's a sloppy bit of initial Japanese production, on par with the erroneous layering of the cells, which I demonstrated in the description. The audio immediately before and after that point is in sync.

Unfortunately the US DVD does not include the japanese intro (a short animation plus the Japanese staff credits). This was included in the German VHS dub.
I have both the US DVD and the German version recorded from TV.
thanks for the quality release
